Borough residents may get to vote this October on whether or not to raise the tax cap to $1,000.
Currently residents do not pay taxes on purchases over $500 but the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly will once again discuss putting the question to voters this evening.
Homer Assembly Member Kelly Cooper introduced the ordinance…
Asm. Cooper: “Well we’re looking at declining revenues from the state and there’s always an issue with school funding and revenues in general. I was really against the sales tax on non-prepared foods and thought that this was a much better solution. As well as that tax has not been adjusted since the 60’s when it was instituted.”
The assembly will decide whether or not to take public testimony tonight since members of the public did weigh in during the May meeting.
That meeting begins at 6 pm this evening in the Borough Assembly Chambers.
