Residents of Nikiski will vote in October on whether or not to increase their mill rate in order to establish a Law Enforcement Service Area(LESA).
Ann Krogseng has been instrumental in the process of trying to get the proposed LESA on the October ballot.
At Tuesday’s meeting she explained there are multiple ways the Nikiski Community Action Group has been proactive against their community’s crime, including attending the hearings of the alleged criminals.
Krogseng: “We’ve decided to put a face on crime. In my experience in my home and in our business, these individuals come in the middle of the night and I think that if they can come into my home and my business, I have the right to see what they look like. So we go to court and we sit and we watch the proceedings. As these individuals are released back into our community there is a system in place called VINE and we access that and we are notified when those individuals are released back to our community.”
Krogseng encouraged other communities who are having the same problems to be proactive as well by joining together in positive ways to reduce crime.
She ended by saying that despite all their efforts, the group did decide that the LESA will help the most and the community wants to vote on it.
The assembly members voted 8-1, Mako Haggerty was the only no vote, stating he was concerned about the level of liability it the proposed LESA puts the borough under.
