Two teams of Aurora Borealis students are traveling to Iowa this week to compete in the Future Problem Solving Program International Conference.
Aurora Borealis Teacher Julie Ball has been coaching the teams; one made up of four, sixth graders who traveled to the conference last year, and the other team is comprised of four students from the seventh, eighth and ninth grades.
Ball: “Each time they do one of these things it’s a different topic. So this year the topic is intellectual property, the future of intellectual property. And so they have to look at the laws and regulations now about intellectual property and then look at trends 40 years into the future and how will these technological trends impact intellectual properties.”
Intellectual property is defined as creations of the mind such as music, literature, and other artistic works.
Ball said the competition requires heavy researching in preparation.
Once there, the Aurora Borealis students will be given two hours to write out how to address this year’s theme as a global issue.
The competition will be June 10-14 at the Iowas State University, where there will be over 2,200 students from countries across the globe.
