March Madness Alaska 2017 advances into the state tournament week for the 3A and 4A divisions with the top teams in the larger school divisions battling for state titles at the 2017 ASAA 3A and 4A State Basketball Championships at the Alaska Airlines Center on the campus of UAA.
The top player in the state, as selected by Gatorade as the Alaska Gatorade Boys Basketball Player of the Year, Ninilchik senior Austin White already has his state championship medal and the 1A Boys championship trophy has found its spot in a showcase at Ninilchik School.
Austin White was named 2017 Gatorade Boys Basketball Player of the Year on Monday, joining Dimond High sophomore Alissa Pili, selected for the girls player of the year.
Austin and the Wolverines dominated play at the 1A basketball level throughout the 2016-17 season and capped a second straight, undefeated year in 1A competition with a second 1A state championship for the Wolverines.

CHICAGO (March 20, 2017) — In its 32nd year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, today announced Austin White of Ninilchik High School as its 2016-17 Gatorade Alaska Boys Basketball Player of the Year. White is the first Gatorade Alaska Boys Basketball Player of the Year to be chosen from Ninilchik High School.
The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court, distinguishes White as Alaska’s best high school boys basketball player. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year award to be announced in March,
The 6-foot-7, 205-pound senior forward had led the Wolverines to a 17-8 record and a berth in the Class 1A state tournament at the time of his selection. White averaged 17.3 points, 13.7 rebounds, 4.1 blocks and 3.7 assists through 25 games. White has maintained a 3.99 GPA in the classroom. He has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball on scholarship at the University of Alaska-Anchorage this fall.

Peninsula Players & Coaches Honored With All-State Selections
The Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches has released its selections for All-State basketball teams in four classifications and state coaches of the year in four classifications.
Nick Finley, head coach for the Ninilchik Wolverines boys basketball has been named 1A Boys Coach of the Year. Finley guided the Wolverines to a second-straight 1A state basketball championship in 2017.
Scott Anderson, head coach for the Nikiski Bulldogs has been named 3A Girls Coach of the Year. Anderson guided the Bulldogs to the #3 seed at the upcoming ASAA 3A Girls State Championships, which begin play on Thursday, March 23rd.
