A rolling 7.1 earthquake tossed Kenai Peninsula residents for several minutes last night, starting multiple house fires, knocking out power and breaking apart K-Beach Road.
The U.S. Geological Survey upgraded the long, rolling earthquake that struck at about 1:30 am Sunday to 7.1 magnitude with several aftershocks after. The epicenter registered at approximately 54 miles west southwest of Anchor Point, 52 miles east of Old Iliamna. There is no tsunami warning at this time. Reports from Kenai to Anchorage say it was well felt, with some reports of damage to homes and minor injuries from falling objects. Drivers also reported seeing rocks falling on the Seward Highway along Turnagain Arm. At around 2:30 am the Kenai Fire Department was on the scene of a gas leak/explosion at a home. KFD and Central Emergency Services have been busy tending to calls following the quake. The earthquake also caused significant damage to the back side of K-Beach Road near the intersection of the Sterling Highway in Kasilof.
