Kenai Peninsula Borough Emergency Manager Provides COVID-19 Update

Nelson said that the Borough’s response was strong as the emergency started, and has continued to be strong. He said that the system used nationwide put certain powers in the Borough’s hands: such as PPE, testing supplies, and other scarce resources, noting that it is not as vital now as it was, but that the Borough is still responding in a big way.

Alaska Pandemic Food Relief Program Extends Application Deadline

The program’s aim is to provide additional money for families to buy food, making up for food expenditures due to COVID-19 related school closures during March, April, and May of the 2019-2020 school year. The deadline to apply is now the end of September.

Alaska Marine Highway System Winter 2020-21 Schedule Open For Booking

Alaska Marine Highway System revenues are significantly lower than expected due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, the Department of Transportation noted that it has become necessary to build the schedule with reduced service to most communities.

2020 Primary Election Results Officially Certified

Results of the August 18 statewide primary election have officially been certified. Prior to election day, the Alaska Division of Elections reported more than 70,000 early votes and requests for absentee ballots.  All have officially been counted and results have been marked.

Kenai Municipal Airport will be receiving a little over $1 million to buy land for approaches, as well as to build, repair, or expand a sand and chemical storage building.

Rocket Launch From Kodiak Island Delayed Again

Astra communicated the delay via Twitter. Their plan was to look at launching from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. each day from August 30 until September 3. Due to poor weather conditions, the launch window’s start was pushed back until September 10.

ConocoPhillips Alaska Makes Match Challenge To Alaska SeaLife Center

The ConocoPhillips Alaska donation is a matching donation, which means they will match the next $250,000 that the Alaska SeaLife Center is able to raise. Memberships and other donations are eligible for this match through the month of September or until the $250,000 is reached.

Four Weekend Kenai Peninsula COVID Cases Announced, Positive Test Rate Falling

The Kenai Peninsula’s rate of daily tests with positive results has sat close to 3.0% over the past week. Borough-level percentage of daily tests with positive results in the Kenai Peninsula was at 0.9% on both Saturday and Sunday’s reports. The last time the rate of tests was so low was on May 25 when the rate was 0.9%.
