The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services reported 17 new positive COVID-19 cases in their Thursday update, including three in the Kenai Peninsula Borough. Two cases are in Homer and one from an area of the Kenai Peninsula with fewer than 1,000 residents.

The Kenai Peninsula Borough is collecting household hazardous waste on Saturday June 13 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Central Peninsula Landfill in south Soldotna. This event is offered to minimize harmful toxins entering into the landfill and is a free service to households; businesses will be charged a fee.

Kenai City Manager Paul Ostrander offered details to KSRM on how the city of Kenai plans to spend their allotted Federal CARES Act funding.

Alaska adults can prevent diabetes by participating in a new, free telephone program. Alaska’s Diabetes Prevention and Control Program is making diabetes prevention easier by providing a free program for Alaska adults with pre-diabetes who want to prevent developing diabetes and stay healthy.

According to the Alaska Division of Forestry’s Facebook feed, a spark produced by a bald eagle hitting a power line ignited a small grass fire near Kenai on Monday.

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities announced on Wednesday that construction is beginning on the Sterling Highway MP 45 – 60 project. Clearing started the week of May 26th and geotechnical drilling began the week of June 3.

The 2020 parade celebrating Independence Day, along with associated festivities, has been cancelled in the city of Kenai.  The announcement was made in an e-mail from the Kenai Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and Staff, in conjunction with the City of Kenai.

The American Red Cross recently launched a Virtual Family Assistance Center to support families struggling with loss and grief due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The Center is a support hub with special virtual programs, information, referrals, and services to support families in-need across Alaska.
