2020 Salmonfest Cancelled, Aiming For 2021 Return

Salmonfest announced their decision to cancel the 2020 event and reschedule for August 6 – 8 of next year, in a release issued on Friday. They do still hope to work with local health departments about hosting a smaller-scale gathering this year, if circumstances allow for it.

Aid Is Being Offered To Farmers And Ranchers

Food producers who have been hurt financially by the COVID-19 pandemic have an opportunity to get aid from the federal government starting Tuesday. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is accepting applications for the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program through August 28.

Alaska State Fair Canceled For First Time Since World War II

The 2020 Alaska State Fair has been canceled, according to a statement from the Alaska State Fair Board of Directors and CEO issued over the Memorial Day weekend. The statement attributes the cancellation to “continuing uncertainty regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.” The fair was set to take place August 27 – September 7. 

State Troopers Rescue Four Sterling Dogs

On Friday afternoon, Alaska State Troopers responded to a Sterling residence after receiving a complaint regarding malnourished dogs on the property. A total of four dogs were located on the property chained to separate trees with no access to food or water.

Two New Positive COVID-19 Cases

The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services reported two new positive COVID-19 cases in their Friday update. That makes the total positive case count in the state 404. One case is out of Juneau and the other is out of Nome.
