Homer Electric Association members elected three directors to represent each district of HEA’s service territory after utilizing a mail-in ballot system. All members were mailed ballots to cast votes, due to the state’s social distancing guidelines.

The Kenai Peninsula Borough Office of Emergency Management held a Community Conversation to offer in-depth insight into the steps taken following the most recent COVID-19 death in Anchor Point. It was held on Wednesday night and hosted by Dan Nelson, Borough Incident Commander, alongside Brenda Ahlberg, Information Officer.

One New Case Of COVID-19, One New Anchor Point Death

The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services reported one new positive COVID-19 case in their Wednesday update. That makes the total positive case count in the state 372.  The new positive case is out of the Southeast Fairbanks area. One new death has also been reported, raising the total to ten cumulative fatalities in Alaska.

May 5 Marks ‘Giving Tuesday,’ Celebrated Earlier Than Usual

“Giving Tuesday” is typically celebrated after Thanksgiving as a platform for individuals, families, and organizations to support important causes during the holiday season. This year, Giving Tuesday is being celebrated today, May 5, as a global day of giving and unity. The COVID-19 pandemic prompted moving the celebration ahead and re-naming it, “Giving Tuesday Now.”

Chief Medical Officer Hopes In-Person Mental Health Care Returns Soon

Alaska has made strides towards a return to normalcy, but despite rolling back restrictions on the medical sector of the economy in April, mental health has been a gray area. Many patients statewide have felt that telemedicine is inadequate to their needs. Alaska’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Anne Zink, says that the state is working to find a solution that suits those patients while also maintaining community safety.
