The Alaska State Board of Education and Early Development voted unanimously at their quarterly meeting for Dr. Deena Bishop to take the role of the Commissioner of the Department of Education and Early Development (DEED) on Wednesday, July 26.

A federal jury convicted an Anchorage man yesterday on three felony counts, including one count of possession of controlled substances with intent to distribute, and two firearm related charges, following a trial spanning a week and a half.

The Alaska Department of Public Safety’s Sex Assault Kit Tracking System recently went live statewide enabling survivors of sexual assault to track the status of their kit securely online. Victims now have access to a portal for the tracking system which allows them to track the progress of their kit in the least invasive and traumatic way.

The National Weather Service in Anchorage has issued a Tsunami Warning which includes the coastal areas of Alaska from Kennedy Entrance Alaska, which is located 40 miles SW of Homer to Unimak Pass, Alaska, which is located 80 miles NE of Unalaska. Communities of Katchemak Bay and upper Cook Inlet are NOT in danger. An ALL CLEAR has been issued for all communities in Homer and coastal communities of Katchemak Bay. NO coastal communities on the Kenai Peninsula are in danger.
