As the school year approaches, shoebox packers are making use of back-to-school prices to purchase gifts and essential items for children in need around the world. Residents of the Kenai Peninsula are collecting school supplies, along with personal care items and fun toys, to pack in shoeboxes. Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, will deliver these gift-filled shoeboxes to children in more than 100 countries.

The annual Bristol Bay Sockeye Salmon fishery is the largest Sockeye fishery in the World, producing around 46% of the global wild Sockeye harvest. The fishery is valued at over $1.5 billion and provides thousands of direct and indirect jobs.

A helicopter that crashed on Alaska’s remote and vast North Slope in July, killing three state scientists and the pilot, stopped sending flight-status data to a real-time tracking system as it passed over the southeastern shoreline of an Arctic lake, according to a preliminary report on the crash released Tuesday.

A group of auto repair shop owners and workers presented at the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly Meeting on August 1st, decrying the Department of Transportation’s use of a Calcium Chloride “Salt” Brine on peninsula roads. In addition to the local presence, a legislative liaison from the DOT, Andy Mills, spoke on behalf of the DOT.
