Congressman Nick Begich (R-AK) announced his co-sponsorship and strong support for the bipartisan Fix Our Forests Act, a critical piece of legislation aimed at addressing the escalating threat of catastrophic wildfires, streamlining forest restoration efforts, and fostering economic growth in rural communities.

The City of Soldotna is accepting of applications for the Mini-Grant Program from now until February 15. This is the second of two grant cycles opened annually by the city.

44-year-old Joshua Butcher was sentenced to 85 years for the shooting that occurred at a Safeway in Fairbanks on Nov. 7, 2021. Assistant District Attorney Anna Ralph called it “one of, if not the most, shocking cases in Fairbanks’ history” that threatened the entire community’s sense of security.

Project Homeless Connect, an event by the Kenai Peninsula Homeless Coalition (KPHC), will take place at different locations across the Kenai Peninsula on Tuesday, Jan. 28. The coalition’s mission is to connect those experiencing homelessness with the care they need to move forward.

The Alaska Senate gaveled in the 34th Alaska State Legislature on Tue. Jan.21. The 14-member Senate Majority announced their legislative priorities for the legislative session, which will build upon previous efforts to strengthen Alaska’s economy.

The Alaska State Fair is awarding scholarships to Alaska high school students. This year, the Fair will award $8,000 in scholarships.

The Rotary Club and Girl Scout Troop 210 teamed up to build bucket trees to prevent wildfires in Alaska. 

Grant applications are available through the Federal Specialty Crop Block, a federal program provided by the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service and administered by the Alaska Division of Agriculture.

The Alaska Association of Elementary School Principals announced that Aubrie Ellis, Assistant Principal of Mountain View Elementary in the KPBSD, is their National Outstanding Assistant Principal for 2025.
