The Chugach National Forest Avalanche Center in Girdwood is reporting a Backcountry Avalanche Warning in effect till 6:00 a.m. Wednesday for the Western Chugach and Kenai mountains.
Avalanche danger is HIGH as a strong storm system that moved into the area yesterday afternoon continues through today. Recent heavy snowfall and rain combined with strong winds have created widespread areas of unstable snow. Both human triggered and natural large avalanches are likely on slopes steeper than 30 degrees. Debris from avalanches above may run into valley bottoms. Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended. Warming temperatures and rain could cause roofs to begin to shed their snow. Pay special attention to children, pets and where you park your car.
The avalanche warning includes the affected areas of the western Chugach and Kenai mountains in and around Girdwood, Turnagain Pass, Summit Lake, Lost Lake and Seward., due to heavy precipitation, warm temperatures, and strong winds.
An announcement from the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities reports that there will be intermittent traffic delays on the Seward Highway and Portage Glacier Highway for Avalanche Hazard Reduction work. From mileposts 88 to 85 on the Seward Highway, South of Girdwood. Near milepost 5 and Bear Valley on the Portage Glacier Highway. Motorists should expect delays of up to 45 minutes between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Updates will be posted on the AK 511 system.
Similar avalanche danger may exist at locations outside the coverage area of avalanche centers. This avalanche warning does not apply to ski areas or highways where avalanche reduction measures are performed.
