Baseball Revised Is Baseball Alive: Alliance Set To Provide Summer Baseball In-Place-Of Legion

Author: Coach Dan Gensel |

The Alliance for American Legion Baseball in Alaska ( The Alliance) formulated a new management group which has taken over operation of summer baseball for Alaska teenagers in 2020 with a revised schedule and changes to player districts for the 2020 summer baseball season.  The Alliance stepped-up after the Alaska Legion suspended any official activities sponsored by American Legion.

The Alliance Assumes Control

The Alliance will be the go-to for 2020 summer baseball for players age 13-19 in Alaska.

Robb Quelland, Alaska 20 head coach, on Alliance role in baseball…

“They’re the logistic, they’re the contact with the state, basically the hub of all of the teams leading up and going through them to make baseball happen this summer.”

New Look For Post 20 Twins

The combined team for 2020 will be referred to as Alaska 20 and will allow players age 13-19 from multiple communities.  Alaska Legion has in recent years expanded the league and pushed for each community with a Legion post to field its own team.  Those restrictions will be lifted, meaning the Alaska 20 team will be able to draw from the Kenai Peninsula and Kodiak for its roster.  New boundaries will be established throughout the state to allow for fewer total teams and a condensed schedule.

Robb Quelland on new name, rosters and field usage and schedule…

“Alaska 20 (new name) and there’s been no clear definition on whether we will be allowed to use Legion affiliated post or uniforms.  Instead of being in the stand-by we decided to just go with the new name to define who we are this year.  We’re going to actually go back about ten years it seems like; we are going to have the entire Kenai Peninsula and Kodiak is available.  We are working with coaches and some families over there to possibly bringing some players once the season gets going, when we can get some housing and see how things are working out.”

More than likely we are going to go back to Kenai Little League park for games, possibly at Soldotna Little League fields, and even we are hoping to play down in Homer one or two games because we have quite a few players from there.”  “We are going to be very close to game in number as years past- 30+.  The first scheduled games are June 10th, looks like I don’t have the exact location or times but looks like we are playing a doubleheader June 10th.  The first period of time, are all non-league (games) to get the kids in shape since they did not have a regular season.  We are going to be real limited on how much they play and pitch so we don’t have any injuries.”

Alliance League Teams Formed Into Two Divisions

The Alliance League will be divided into two divisions: National and American.

The American Division will include the Kenai Twins (Alaska 20) and Bartlett, Eagle River, East, Ketchikan, Palmer, Service and South.

The National Division will include Chugiak, Dimond, Fairbanks, Juneau, North Pole, Sitka, Wasilla and West.

Robb Quelland on teams and schedule…

“It is going to look very similar to last year’s Legion team, I don’t think we’ll have as many (teams) and travel issues with Southeast teams is going to be the hardest.  I know for sure Kodiak is not going to have a team; they were still stuck on Juneau, Sitka and Ketchikan having teams or being able to travel to and from, still that’s being worked out.  Anchorage is a go.  Fairbanks has two full teams plus they have some A teams or JV teams, they have a strong number of turnout for players.”

Baseball Registration Information

Lance Coz, with nearly 45 years of experience with the local Legion baseball program, will again in 2020 act as team general manager and will coordinate player registration.

Robb Quelland on player registration…

” They can contact myself via email, preferably contact Coach Lance-his email is [email protected].  He is taking all the applications and inquires at the time.”

Alliance To Meet State COVID-19 Protocols & Coach Training Requirements

Coaches in the new Alliance league will be required to meet the same state standards of Legion coaches to participate, such as Protect Youth Sports background checks and abuse training.  The Alliance will also develop COVID-19 protocols.

Robb Quelland on safety and precautions…

“We are working with the state on their guidelines through the Alliance right now.  The safety of the players, coaches and fans is number one.  We are going to be checking for signs and symptoms before practice we have sanitation during practice itself; we’re going to social distance as much as possible.  When we do need to get closer we will have masks on.  We trying to set up as many precautions as possible, even though we’re in game where you do play near each other at times.”
