Non-conference basketball opened the January schedule for high school basketball with the Nikiski Bulldogs hosting the Kenai Kardinals on Thursday. The Nikiski girls controlled play for a 52-29 victory over Kenai; the Kardinal boys road an early lead for a 54-40 win over Nikiski.
Nikiski Girls 52 – Kenai 29
The Nikiski Bulldogs girls defense stifled the Kardinals throughout the 52-39 Bulldog victory. Kenai was held to single-digit scoring in all four quarters and managed only 12 field goals. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 19-6 lead and scored in double figures in all four quarters. Jaycie Calvert lead Kenai with 11 points, including three, three-point baskets. Kelsey Clark and Bethany Carstens lead the Bulldog attack with 16 and 15 points, respectively.
The Nikiski girls improve to 6-1 on the season; the Kenai girls drop to 4-3.
Kenai Boys 54 – Nikiski 40
A 14-1 start out of the gate for the Kardinal boys stacked Kenai to a lead that would not be relinquished. Kenai lead by 22 poits at the half 32-10. Preben Strende , an exchange student from Norway, scored 18 points for the Kardinals; Luke Beiser lead Kenai with a 21-point effort.
Upcoming Schedule For Nikiski & Kenai
The Nikiski teams open Southcentral Conference play next week with road games to Houston, Joe Redington and ACS.
Kenai is scheduled to travel to Palmer next Satruday for Northern Lights Conference contests.
SoHi vs Kodiak Friday and Saturday, January 5-6 Split Venues
The Soldotna Stars open Northern Lights Conference play with a pair of games against the Kodiak Bears.
SoHi girls vs Kodiak @ Kodiak Note Game Time Changes!
The SoHi girls travel to Kodiak for contests on Friday and Saturday. Game times are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Friday and 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. The Star girls were off for the holidays while the Kodiak girls finished play at the Joe Floyd tournament with an 0-3 record.

SoHi boys vs Kodiak @ Soldotna High
The SoHi boys host Kodiak for the conference opener on Friday and Saturday at Soldotna High School. Game times are scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday.
The Star boys return from San Diego where SoHi finished 1-2 in the San Diego Surf ‘N Slam Tournament. The Kodiak boys closed play at the Joe Floyd tournament with a 61-57 victory over Nikiski.
