Jury duty fees, one year anniversary of the Boston bombing, and Flight 370 are a few topics of the recent scams that have hit Alaska.
Alaska Regional Manager Michelle Tabler with the Better Business Bureau said that victims in Alaska have been phoned and told they owed money for failing to appear for jury duty.
Tabler: “They want you to pay a fee or penalty on it because you didn’t show up for jury duty and they want you to put it on a prepaid debit card that you go down to Walmart and get and of course that’s the same as cash. And these are not cheap, its been like $1800-1900 that people have put on a Walmart card and given to these people.”
She said that in Alaska there is no fee for not showing up for jury duty.
Tabler also said that links and emails claiming to be taking donations for the one year anniversary of the Boston Bombing and the Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 families have been reported too.
Tabler: “You see them on facebook where people are sharing them sometimes, they’re getting them as emails but if you click on it its taking you to a fake site and you’ll have pop-ups on there and its taking you somewhere you don’t want to go. So don’t take the bait on that, hover over the link to see what the true destination is.”
