Mayor Mike Navarre won the Kenai Peninsula Borough Mayoral race with a 53.52% vote however Tom Bearup won six of 29 districts.
Navarre said he is excited for upcoming challenges.
Navarre: “But to help find answers and to meet the challenges that we face and to find answers to some of the difficult questions we have in healthcare. For the drug problem we have in the community which includes meth, heroin and spice and other drugs that we need to figure out what it takes to solve the social problems that we have and the challenges that we face with additional development when we see that LNG facility come.”
He said with those challenges come a broad variety of opportunities.
Statistics show Bearup having a very rural following: Anchor Point, Funny River No. 1, Nikiski, Ninilchik, Salamantof, and Sterling No. 2 all voted for him by 45-60%.
Carrol Martin also ran for mayor, his highest votes came from Funny River No. 2 with 14%.
