Congressman Nick Begich has joined a bipartisan group of lawmakers to reauthorize the Young Fishermen’s Development Act to equip the next generation of commercial fishermen with the skills and support needed to thrive in the industry.
Initially introduced by the late Rep. Don Young in 2021, the program provides grants for training, mentorships, and business education through NOAA’s Sea Grant Program. The new bill would extend funding through Fiscal Year 2031, allowing grants of up to $200,000 annually for up to three years per project.
“With high start-up costs and fewer young people entering the trade, this program is more important than ever,” said Begich. “It’s an investment in the future of our fisheries and the young people who will sustain them.”
Reps. Seth Moulton (D-MA), Jill Tokuda (D-HI), Aumua Amata Coleman Radewagen (R-American Samoa), and Jared Golden (D-ME) are co-sponsors. They all cited the cultural and economic importance of fishing in their districts.
The bill supports training in navigation, vessel maintenance, business skills, and safety, with a focus on hands-on mentorship and outreach. It’s backed by fishing organizations, Sea Grant institutions, and coastal community groups nationwide.
“This ensures our oceans and working waterfronts remain part of our future,” said Rep. Tokuda.
If passed, the legislation will continue to provide young fishermen with a pathway into one of the nation’s oldest and most vital industries.
