Congressman Nick Begich returned from a bipartisan congressional delegation (CODEL) to Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea, emphasizing Alaska’s potential to become a cornerstone of U.S. energy diplomacy in the Indo-Pacific.
As a member of the House Natural Resources Committee, Begich joined Chairman Bruce Westerman (R-AR) and colleagues to promote long-term energy partnerships, with Alaska’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) project central to the discussions.
“Alaska is positioned to deliver stable, long-term energy to our allies,” Begich said. “This trip marked a step forward in building strategic partnerships that reduce global dependence on adversarial energy sources.”
In meetings with top officials and industry leaders, including Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te and South Korea’s Minister of Trade, the delegation highlighted Alaska’s shipping advantages and resource potential.
Taiwan’s CPC Corporation has already signed a letter of intent for 6 million metric tons of Alaskan LNG, with Japanese and Korean interest growing.
Chairman Westerman added, “Alaska’s resources are critical to reshaping global energy dynamics. Our partners are eager for U.S. LNG.”
Begich also raised the issue of critical minerals, noting Alaska’s untapped potential in materials like gallium and graphite, which are key to diversifying high-tech supply chains.
The delegation underscored a shared commitment to strengthening U.S. alliances through energy, trade, and innovation.
