Congressman Nick Begich worked quickly with the Department of the Interior (DOI) and the General Services Administration (GSA) to reverse the planned lease termination for the Alaska Volcano Observatory in Anchorage. The observatory is crucial for monitoring volcanic activity and issuing alerts to protect lives and the aviation industry.
Congressman Begich emphasized its importance for Alaska’s safety and the aviation sector, particularly as Mount Spurr, the closest active volcano to Anchorage, shows signs of potential eruption.
“The Alaska Volcano Observatory federal office lease is critical for mission objectives, particularly in the midst of a growing volcanic threat,” said Congressman Begich. “This observatory is important to Alaska’s safety and aviation industry. My staff and I worked with the Department of Interior and the GSA to address this issue as high priority.”
On March 18, the lease was reinstated, ensuring uninterrupted operations. Previous eruptions from Mount Spurr have caused widespread ash, flight disruptions, and significant economic impact in Southcentral Alaska. By restoring the lease, Begich ensured that vital monitoring systems continue and residents, businesses, and visitors are protected from potential volcanic risks.
