Bill for Adding 20 Native Languages Moves Through House State Affairs

The House State Affairs Committee advanced a bill today that aims to recognize 20 Alaskan Native languages alongside English as Alaska’s official language.

 

House Bill 216 lists 20 languages to be added, including Yupik, Inupiaq, and Tlingit. Some of the other languages listed only have a few dozen fluent speakers left.

 

University of Alaska Southeast Native Languages Professor Lance Twitchell spoke to the committee that the inclusion of the languages will help to heal the trauma from when native languages were forbidden.

Prof. Twitchell: “You cannot have multiculturalism in Alaska and monolinguilism at the same time, you just get language death. The greatest way to achieve unity is to look at your fellow man and say you are of equal value.” 

 

Committee Chair Rep. Bob Lynn pointed out the amount of support for the bill when he had supporters in the audience stand, showing many individuals dressed in traditional Tlingit attire.

 

The Committee modified the bill to ensure that official recognition does not require business to be done in all 21 languages but allows local governments to do use those languages.

 

The bill passed State Affairs Committee with no objections.
