The Uniform Time Act would exempt Alaska from daylight savings time and advanced through the Senate State Affairs Committee February 10.
Senator Anna MacKinnon brought the bill forward, which, if passed, would be implemented in 2017.
It would put Alaska five hours behind the East Coast year round rather than four hours behind from about March to November.
In the committee meeting, MacKinnon said she wants to help Alaskans avoid health impacts that are associated with changing the clocks each spring and fall.
Some of the examples she gave included increased rates of heart attacks, suicide, and traffic accidents in the spring.
If the bill gets enacted it would give Alaska the ability to exempt itself from daylight saving time, although not change time zones entirely.
