Birding signs have been springing up across the area as the Kenai Birding Festival events kick off Thursday.
The Festival begins with a full day float trip down the Kenai River, followed by an opening reception at the Kenai Visitors Center starting at 7pm.
Local bird watchers, like Bob Shafer, say the festival brings them to areas of the Kenai they wouldn’t otherwise explore…
Shafer: “Well anywhere we go, we live south down by Clam Gulch, so anywhere between there and here, when we go down on a beach we’re always looking for birds. When we drive we look for them, too. Any of the pullouts, when we have time to stop, like today we’ll stop and pull in and see what’s there. In this time of the year it’s fun, because you’ll see things will change. Next time you’ll come through here there’ll be different birds in different quantities. They’ll move on. We live where we can watch the Sandhills migrate right over us.”
