The National Weather Service in Anchorage has issued a Blizzard Warning in effect late Tuesday evening, March 21st, through Wednesday evening, March 22nd, for Moose Pass and Turnagain Pass.
Western Prince William Sound – Including the cities of Whittier, Seward, Girdwood, and Moose Pass
Another winter storm is expected to bring another round of strong winds and heavy snow with blizzard conditions expected especially between Moose Pass and Turnagain Pass. Portage Valley and the Seward area will briefly see a period of heavy snow before changing over to rain as temperatures rise into the mid to upper 30s Wednesday morning. Areas between Moose Pass and Turnagain Pass will see the heaviest snow with 10 to 20 inches possible. Blowing snow may cause near white-out conditions at times especially Tuesday night. As temperatures warm during the day on Wednesday visibilities will begin to improve by Wednesday afternoon.
Blizzard conditions are expected for the Western Prince William Sound, from 10 p.m. Tuesday evening to 6 p.m. Wednesday with visibilities down to a quarter mile or less in blowing snow. Total snow accumulations of 7 to 20 inches possible and winds gusting as high as 50 mph.
Plan on slippery road conditions. Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility to a quarter of a mile or less. The hazardous conditions will impact the morning and afternoon commute.
A Blizzard Warning means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. Falling and blowing snow with strong winds and poor visibilities are likely. This will lead to whiteout conditions, making travel very hazardous. If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle.
