Robert (Bob) Mumford was appointed by the governor to the Board of Fisheries on May 19, but first will have to resign from his seat on the Board of Game.

Board of Game Chair Ted Spraker of Soldotna said he didn’t think anyone had ever previously been on both boards at the same time.

Spraker: “And because he wasn’t reappointed to the point of game, his term would end, June 30, but the way this works is that if he resigned today for instance, then the governor has to appoint another person for Bob’s replacement. If he waits until the first of June then the governor doesn’t have to appoint another person because Bob’s already been replaced by Kip Fanning which will come on July 1.”

Spraker has known Mumford for over 25 years and also spoke with us about why he feels Mumford will be a great addition to the Board of Fisheries.

Spraker: “I think what really sets him apart from a lot of folks as far as being a board member, whether it’s Board of Game or Board of Fish, is that he’s not involved, he’s never been a commercial fisherman so he has no ties to commercial fishermen, and using his words, he’s a very poor sport fisherman, so he’s not very interested in sport fishing. He’s a hunter, he’s a photographer.”

Mumford has yet to face legislative confirmation.
