BOEM Scoping Meetings Begin this Week

Tomorrow, November 12, begins the first of five scoping meetings by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management across the Kenai Peninsula.

This is part of the public comment period discussing federal waters in the Cook Inlet being opened to oil and gas lease sales by 2018 as part of a Bureau of Ocean Energy Management plan.

We spoke to Leasing Administration Specialist Parker McWilliams at an October 22 open house at Kenai Peninsula College.

McWilliams: “ My understanding is they’ll be November 12th-14th down here on the Peninsula and we’re going to make sure to put out a public announcement  ahead of time and try to get the word out on those meetings. This scoping process would be the beginning of the National Environmental Policy Act analysis for this sale. Potentially, we’re about three years out from potentially holding this sale if the decision is made to proceed.’

The next scoping meeting to be held in Soldotna will be Friday, November 14, at the Kenai Peninsula College at 7 pm.
