The Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly will hear the first of two public hearings on their budget for Fiscal Year 2017 during their meeting in Soldotna tonight.
Borough Mayor Mike Navarre detailed a couple of the cost-saving measures the proposed draft budget includes.
Mayor Navarre: “We’re combining two departments into one, the Purchasing Department and the Capital Projects Department are going to be merged into one department if the Assembly approves it, that’ll have some savings. We’re also looking at closing the Solid Waste Facilities for one day a week, probably on Thursdays, we’re evaluating that. If the Assembly approves, we’re not going to have it closed during the summer months so for July and August we would not close. Just after that, for the other ten months of the year we would close one day a week and I think that would provide I think a couple hundred thousand dollars in savings over the course of a year.”
Those proposals along with the entire budget will be up for public comment at tonight’s meeting which will begin at 6:00 pm in the Soldotna Borough Assembly Chambers.
