The Kenai Peninsula Borough is considering a logo change going into the new year.

The ordinance, sponsored by the Mayor would permit the Borough to adopt a new logo.

The current logo showcases a bull moose, a bald eagle, and a small fish jumping out of the water. The colors are bright and vibrant, and have the words “Kenai Peninsula Borough” engraved out the outmost part of the image. This iconic image was first created back in 1995.

The new, proposed logo would be in a circle, similar to the current logo, with some different details. A darkened purple sky would adorn the image, with two pine trees, mountain ranges, the Big Dipper, and the North Star in the background. It would also have the letters ‘KPB’ in the center of the image. ‘Kenai Peninsula Borough-Est. 1964’ would read the outermost circle.

One of the main issues surrounding the logo change is the cost to print the image. According to Michelle Turner, the KPB’s City Clerk, the old image is ‘quite expensive to reproduce,’ considering all of the colors and details that are involved.

“However, cost standpoint for reproduction of our current logo on jackets and other swag that the departments may use when they’re out in the public so the public can identify them as borough employees. That logo in of itself is quite expensive to reproduce because of all the colors that are involved, so. We are anticipating that this logo that’s before you today would be considerably less to reproduce,” said Turner.

Assembly Vice President Tyson Cox seemed pleased at the new logo, stating “I like it. I’ve been asking, I think since I came on the assembly, for a different logo.”

According to municipal code, any thoughts or updates to the logo ordinance may be changed or updated by a resolution.
