The Kenai Peninsula Borough will offer Community Emergency Response Team classes starting June 23 and running through July 12.
Dan Nelson with the Borough’s Office of Emergency Management detailed the what the classes aim to do.
Nelson: “And it’s designed to train people not first responders but just normal citizens about what they can do to help themselves and their neighbors in a natural disaster so we provide a base level of training of fire safety, medical preparedness, so if something major as in the 1964 earthquake comes they’re able to help themselves when first responders are overwhelmed.”
He said anyone is welcome to take the classes and may register at the www.kpvolunteers.org.
Nelson: “Members of our CERT team come from every different background, every community of the borough, typically we’re not looking for but we certainly welcome people with first response training but we want folks who are just interested in helping themselves, maybe helping their community, giving back a little bit but its designed for everybody, its ability oriented so it doesn’t matter what physical condition or age anybody’s in, its a curriculum at a great level and it just trains basic skills that everybody can look at and master that might be helpful if something were to happen.”
There is no charge or obligation for the class and training materials will be provided.
