An ordinance authorizing the negotiated lease of classroom space at the Soldotna Prep Building with the Boys and Girls Club of the Kenai Peninsula was discussed at last night’s Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly meeting.

Assemblyman Richard Derkevorkian, “This is authorizing the negotiated lease of classroom space at the Soldotna Prep Building with the Boys and Girls Club of the Kenai Peninsula. This was brought to us by the Mayor. The Borough Administration has set up a lease agreement with the Boys and Girls Club to use vacant space in SoPrep Building. There’s some discussion about how much the Soldotna Prep costs the Borough, and long-term plans for it. It costs approximately $225,000 a year to keep the lights and heating on in the building and minor maintenance. It would be nice to get some revenue coming back in from that school and provide a space for the local Boys and Girls club that does a lot for the community.

The proposed lease to the Boys and Girls Club of the Kenai Peninsula is for 10 classroom spaces as well as “as available” use of the gymnasiums. The ten classrooms total 10,179 square feet, according to supporting documents.

Section 3 of the ordinance states that the monthly rental will be $2,075 in addition to a monthly rental rate of $100 for each gymnasium on an “as available” basis, for an initial term of four months, with month-to-month extensions thereafter. A new Section 7 of Ordinance 2021-02 was added, which says that the mayor is authorized to amend the lease by mutual agreement of the parties to expand or alter the number and location of classroom spaces leased to the Boys and Girls Club for youth services on similar terms as the original lease.

The Soldotna Prep (SoPrep) building was vacated by the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District and is under evaluation for long term planning.
