The Boys and Girls Club of the Kenai Peninsula has seen an increase in youth attendance in their nutritional meals programs. Their free summer food program for anyone 18-years or younger will begin this week.
Executive Director Heather Schloeman says the increased numbers of homeless and transitional living being seen in the Kenai Peninsula School District have been mimicked in attendance in their program.
Schloeman: “We have seen similar situations in our clubs and our food programs and that does include families that are staying with other families, homeless kids, kids that a lot of times will have a meal at the end of the day at our program and then may not see another meal until the next morning.”
The aim of the Summer Food Service Program is to provide nutritious meals to children who usually get those at school during their mid-year break.
Schloeman says the program’s Kenai Teen Center location has added an afternoon dinner Mondays through Saturdays during the summer months. She reiterated that the program is free for anyone 18-years or younger to come receive a nutritious meal and detailed how to get more information…
Schloeman: “They can certainly call the main office at 283-2682 or they can visit us on the web, our website is www.bgckp.com and on the home page there will be a link to the Summer Food Service Program and that will give all of the locations, dates, and times of the food service.”
She says attendance to their summer program is expected to increase also and encouraged any youth who need healthy meals, whether they are club members or not, to take part.
