Budget Compromise Tentatively Reached

Alaska’s legislature appears to have ended the budget stalemate which has gone on since the end of April.

Late Wednesday lawmakers announced a tentative compromise on the main sticking point which has held up the process: pay raises for state employees.

The compromise reportedly calls for preserving state worker pay raises for next year.

Lawmakers would ask Gov. Bill Walker to hold pay raises flat when it negotiates future contracts. They would also seek provisions allowing contracts to be renegotiated if oil goes above $95 a barrel or below $45 a barrel.

The proposed deal will likely be addressed during House and Senate floor meetings Thursday.
