The Alaska Department of Natural Resources has issued an immediate suspension of all burn permits for the Kenai Peninsula and Kodiak Island as wildfire activity intensifies across Interior Alaska.

The suspension went into effect at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 3. It will remain in place until fire activity decreases and firefighting resources, many of which have been redeployed to large wildfires in Interior Alaska, become more readily available.

During the suspension, burning debris piles and lawns, and using burn barrels is prohibited. However, cooking and warming fires under three feet in diameter are still allowed. Officials are urging residents to use extreme caution with any fire, emphasizing the risk of wildfires if embers escape or fires are left unattended.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed about wildfire conditions and adhere to fire safety guidelines to help prevent additional strain on firefighting resources during the suspension period.
