Spirit of Soldotna, a program that showcases student artwork in the Soldotna Chamber of Commerce, has launched. The program is designed to showcase and celebrate student art while promoting local students’ artistic talents.
The city of Soldotna sent a note to public schools in the immediate Soldotna area and Kenai Peninsula College announcing the program’s launch and inviting their students to participate. They also attached guidelines and policies that students can follow, including the artwork size 11 x 14 or 8.5 x 11.
Lisa Parker, Vice Mayor of Soldotna, says they received enthusiastic feedback from the schools.
“They’re all very, very excited about it, and I wouldn’t be surprised that within a couple of weeks, we start to receive student art that we can display in our City Council chambers in Soldotna.”
Parker mentions that the student’s artwork in the Chambers will be rotated so that other students can showcase their art. However, the rotation schedule has not yet been determined, as it depends on the amount of artwork they will receive.
She says one of the ideas behind the Spirit of Soldotna came from seeing artwork in the state capitol building in Juneau, where students from around the state display their work.
“I personally wanted to see artwork in the chambers… As you travel around to businesses here in the central peninsula, they display artwork from students. The borough has done it in the past so it’s something that’s been done and is done around the United States.” Parker says. “We’ve got an amazingly talented artistic community and so to be able to showcase their creativity and artistic achievements is going to be phenomenal.”
Student’s artwork could be displayed in the chambers as early as the upcoming months.
