The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G), Division of Sport Fish Aquatic Education Program, has canceled its annual ice fishing events on Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 25 and 26, at Sports Lake in Soldotna. This decision was made due to the warm weather, which is expected to be the same throughout the weekend.

The weather has created unsafe conditions for large groups of students and volunteers and will likely worsen with the forecasted weather conditions.

ADF&G’s press release stated, “The safety of the students, teachers, parents, and volunteers is of the utmost importance.”

Approximately 400 students registered to attend the events. ADF&G planned to teach peninsula students about ethical angling practices and ice safety, including when not to go out on a lake and the potential dangers.
