Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly Candidate Jake Thompson for the Kenai seat appeared on this morning’s Soundoff.
He was asked his opinion of term limits for local government.
Thompson: “The last time it had come up to be put on the ballot I advocated for it to be put on the ballot because I never got the opportunity to vote on it and I think a lot of people didn’t. Every so many years we’re dealing with a new generation of voters so some issues its good to bring back up and my opinion of terms limits was I felt the voting process handled it. I did see tho after the election overwhelming support for term limits. I think the public has spoken that they do want term limits they don’t want any lifers on the assembly at least for the local level.”
Thompson also weighed-in on the anadromous stream ordinance put in place by the borough assembly and said he had brought that question up to representatives of the area before.
Thompson: “Why do they still have to pay taxes on property they essentially don’t own? And I believe their response was it will probably drive land value down so in a way that’s a tax break, and I was like what a terrible answer everyone wants to pay less taxes but no one wants their property value to dive. I believe there is a way to accomplish both respecting people’s private property and protecting the salmon ultimately. And I would like to see the anadromous stream ordinance repealed and replaced with something simpler.”
He will face off against Blaine Gilman and Grayling Bassett in the October 7 municipal elections.
