Kenai Central High School hosted students from across the peninsula who came to showcase their career and technical abilities on January 29.
Dan Bohrnsen is the work experience & work force coordinator with the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District…
Bohrnsen: “It’s called Skills USA, which is a component of careeer and technical student organizations. And what this does is it’s a competition so that kids can showcase what they’ve learned in the classrooms. That’s what career tech ed is is to prepare kids for the skills they need when they graduate from high school or college. So what we’re doing is bringing all these kids together so that they can compete against each other, kind of like in the real world where you have to compete for a job and you have to show your skill, that’s what we’re doing here.”
We spoke with student Emily Arno in the welding competition who said she was a little nervous.
Arno: “My first semester of welding was last semester and so I only have one under my belt and there’s a lot of juniors and seniors here that have more experience so it’s kind of stressful.”
Michale Meyers said he has been working with his father in a welding shop since he was about six.
Meyers: “I love this, I’ve been waiting for this ever since we got told about this at school and I’ve been signed up since the first day I could be and been excited about it.”
There were also competitions in things like cooking, which included food prep, the process, and end result.
Kala Apted said she’s been in cooking courses for over three years and has had dreams of owning a bakery.
Apted: “I love it.”
