Case of Measles Confirmed in Fairbanks, First in Over a Decade

The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services has confirmed a case of measles in Fairbanks, the first in the state in over a decade.

 

An adult who recently traveled to central Asia tested positive for the measles virus according to the the department on Tuesday.

 

The individual developed a rash a few days after arriving in Fairbanks on May 31.

 

Alaska Section of Epidemiology Chief Dr. Joe McLaughlin recommended Fairbanks residents should make sure they are up-to-date with their measles vaccinations.

 

The measles patient traveled to several locations in Fairbanks from May 31 through June 7 and authorities worry they may have been infectious.

 

Part of the patient’s travels included a flight from Seattle to Fairbanks but did not transit in Anchorage.

 

Federal officials are also contacting people who may have been exposed on the flights back from Asia outside Alaska.
