Central Emergency Services in Soldotna is scheduled to host a Firefighter 1 certification class starting in mid-January 2022. Training will take place on Thursdays and Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with occasional Saturdays. The Firefighter 1 Certification Class lasts from January to May 2022. Participants will receive classroom education along with hands-on training and practical experience to achieve certification as a State of Alaska Firefighter.

Under the general direction and supervision of the CES Fire Chief or his designee, the Firefighter 1 performs emergency procedures in order to preserve and maintain life and property. They also are responsible for maintaining facilities, apparatus and equipment.

An essential function of a Firefighter 1 is that they have to perform firefighting duties according to standard operating procedures including directing water or chemical agents for the control and extinguishment of fires, positioning and climbing ladders for rescue and fire extinguishment, creating openings into buildings, protecting property from water and smoke damage, and emergency rescue operations for fire-trapped victims.

Minimum requirements include being 18 years old and having a GED or a high school diploma. Upon applying, you’ll be tasked with passing a physical agility test and a background check.
