A structure fire off West Poppy Lane on Sunday night initially drew a multi-station response. The residence on Nancy Avenue, just across the street from Alaska Berries, appeared to be a total loss. No one was in the home at the time of the fire.

Central Emergency Services and the Kenai Fire Department responded to the blaze at approximately 7:52 p.m. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a multi-story residence with a front porch fully engulfed in flames and extending back into the home.

The fire drew nearly 10 emergency apparatus from both fire departments, although a Kenai Fire Engine was released from the scene as the fire was brought under control. CES remained on the scene to ensure any continued heat sources were subdued.

At the scene of the fire, CES Fire Marshal Chuck Roney said that the cause of the fire was still under investigation. “[The] fire is under control. We still have some smoldering down in the sub-basement. It looks like it began in the first half of the structure here [at] the main entrance and the porch, and it kind of worked its way up that front wall. I don’t see any likely sources there, but we’re investigating further.”

Shortly before the call came in about the fire, CES received a call about a medical emergency and had units responding to that incident simultaneously.

Roney said at the time that emergency responders were still in the process of trying to contact the homeowner to notify them of the incident.
