2018 Mount Marathon Race Preview

The 2018 Mount Marathon race, which is actually three races crowning four champions, is ready for its yearly onslaught of challengers in both the junior and senior divisions.

Reigning champion in the Men’s Division Scott Peterson of Anchorage posted a time of 44:30 in 2017.  The mountain race course record holder David Norris returns to attempt to break his race record time of 41:26 posted in 2016.

In the Women’s Division the field is wide-open, unless Allie Ostrander returns to Mount Marathon.  In-which-case, the challengers from hill-run courses, cross country skiing, distance running and veterans of the Mount Marathon will all be shooting for the 2017 Mount Marathon Women’s champion.

Allie Ostrander holds two of the Women’s race’s three fastest times and posted the course’s second-fastest, female all-time result with a course time of 49:19 in 2017.  Allie also owns six Junior titles.  Allie holds the course record for Juniors 7-12 at 37:35; Juniors 12-14 at 30:32; and Juniors Overall at 28:54.

Fifty-two Women’s events have been contested through the years, with 36 different women crowned as champions.  Nina Kemppel has claimed victory nine times.

Over 90 years of men’s competitions have crowned only 45 different champions; Bill Spencer leads the multiple winners with eight titles.
