Check Postage, Pick-up Times when Mailing Tax Returns

Today is Tax Day and last-minute tax filers should double-check postage if they are mailing in returns, as well as when your local post office closes. Kenai, Soldotna, Kasilof, Nikiski, and Sterling post offices are all closing at their regular time today.

Mark Reynolds with the U.S. Post Office in Chicago says one of the biggest issues they see each year is people not using enough postage.

Reynolds: “If your return is going to be more than four or five pieces of paper, you will probably want to put a second ounce stamp on that in addition to your regular stamp.”

He says more Americans are choosing to file electronically each year, therefore many post offices are not extending hours for tax day anymore.

Reynolds: “Make sure that you check the last collection time. If you get there after the last collection time on the box, don’t mail it there because it will be considered late by the IRS.”

Years ago, Reynolds says they use to see more than 100 million pieces of mail on Tax Day but last year, that was down to about 65 million.
