Chugach National Forest Reopens Russian River Campground For Winter

The Chugach National Forest announced on Friday, Dec. 21, that the Russian River Campground area is once again open to the public.

The announcement came in a Facebook post and said the campground facility would be accessible and that reservations for Barber Cabin would be back on rec.gov beginning on Saturday, Dec. 22.

According to the U.S. Forest Service, the campground was initially closed on Aug. 15 because “Major construction with heavy equipment will take place on the Russian River Campground Road this fall and winter.”

The continued reconstruction of a one-mile section of Russian River Campground Road involved new retaining walls above and below the road, an expanded road shoulder, a new road surface, and a safety railing. The new road aims to ensure “significantly improved access for all campground users” and a retaining wall to minimize the loss of critical salmon habitat due to hillside erosion.

The August closure was originally intended to end on Dec. 1, 2024.

The Chugach National Forest announcement also notes that reservations are scheduled to once again close on Mar. 1, 2025, in preparation for more construction.
