The fourth annual Cinderella’s Closet event helped students from a broader area of the peninsula this year.
The program was created by Soldotna High School Teacher Meggean Bos…
Bos: “I saw these beautiful, gorgeous prom dresses that were coming in and ladies wearing them one time and then being put in closets. And then I had some students who were talking about how they wanted to go to prom but they couldn’t afford to, and I thought, how can we get dresses that are in our community to our students who may be in need of one.”
The annual event where student and teacher volunteers sort the donations and help teens find the dress they love has now helped 454 girls and is gaining popularity across the peninsula.
Bos: “This year we also had students from Kenai Central High School who volunteered to collect dresses and also volunteered their time during the program to help people who had come in so now we have a partnership with both of those schools. Something else that’s different this year is the demographics of the students that have come, we had students from Kenai Central, Connections, SoHi, Nikiski, Kenai Alternative, Ninilchik and Homer all come to get items.”
Bos said when the program first started they mostly saw students from Soldotna and Skyview high schools but now have even had councilors from as far as Seldovia coming to look at dresses.
Cinderella’s Closet takes donations of shoes and dresses year round and those can be dropped of at the Soldotna High School main office.
