The Cook Inlet Regional Citizens Advisory Council recently installed a new camera at the mouth of the Kenai River as part of their Ice Camera Network.
Giguere: “The public can actually view the beach by webcam through the City of Kenai’s website, that one is important because it monitors the ice created when the freshwater hits the seawater, the ice from the river moves north from Nikiski.”
Director of Public Outreach Lynda Giguere said although the council works to make crude oil transportation safer in the Cook Inlet, they are monitoring progress on the Alaska LNG Project.
Giguere: “The Coast Guard asked us to have a seat at the table for the discussions so we are bringing our resources to bear any information that we have that could help.”
The ice cameras and geographic mapping of Cook Inlet’s shorelines, known as Geographic Response Strategies, are two facets CIRCAC can offer to the increase in LNG vessel traffic that is predicted.
Giguere: “We’re working on making another camera publicly accessible as far as the imagery is concerned and are partnered with Hillcorp. They’re allowing us to do that on the Granite platform so that’s going to happen as soon as we can get the camera installed out there.”
