The City of Kenai will purchase a new rescue boat dedicated to the Kenai Fire Department.

City Manager Rick Koch said it will primarily be used for the personal use fishery season but a few other things as well.

Koch: “We undertake periodic drills for airport rescue in the event there was an aircraft that went down in the water on the approach and the departure from the airport, we have that watercraft ready and we practice with that and it’s available for other city use.”

The originally anticipated $90,000 in funding for the boat came from a state grant and the council passed an ordinance allocating $13,500 additional funds for unanticipated purchase cost and shipping from Juneau to Homer.

Koch said it is a 20 plus year investment and the city will also be able to use it for things like placing the buoys in the no-wake zones during the summer so there will be a plethora of uses for it.
