The Kenai City Council met on Wednesday, November 15th to discuss an ordinance that would provides a 25% discount to military veterans who purchase residential property owned by the City of Kenai.

The ordinance was sponsored by Council Member Baisden.  The Kenai Peninsula has a large percentage of veterans that call Kenai home, and this is a small thank you for their honorable dedication and service to our Country.

He says that considering Veteran’s day was this past weekend, it was the perfect time to bring up this idea.

“You know, State of Alaska, we have a large number of veterans. And Kenai Peninsula specifically we have a lot. The state of Alaska has a program to where if you bid on a piece of property for state of Alaska, you get a 25% discount if you’re a veteran spent on or discharged, and it’s a way of saying thank you for your service.”

Baisden also mentions how many areas on the peninsula, such as the rec center and the burial center, will provide discounts for veterans, which really help motivate to push this idea.

“And it was brought to my attention. There was an auction that just took place and we had a few pieces of property here in the city that the state had available. And it just kind of brought it back to my attention that maybe this is something that we should do it at this level’ said Baisden.

With everything happening in the world, Baisden really want this to be a thank you to veterans and all of the sacrifices they give.

“You know what’s, what’s going on in the world today. We know that these veterans they they give a lot of themselves throughout this country and specifically in the state and I think it’s probably the least we can do for him to help give them a thank you and I would love your support on this.”

After a brief vote, the ordinance passed with all 7 members in favor.
