The silver salmon fishing is getting better each day as the 60th Annual Seward Silver Salmon Derby approaches.
Kenai River guide Dave “CatDaddy” Drake reported what he’s seen on the water this morning.
Catdaddy: “Silvers are a little slow here but we did get some both days and it’s only getting better, it got better yesterday than it was Saturday. So today, hopefully better and tomorrow even better.”
Seward Chamber of Commerce Events Coordinator Kari McKahan said this season Seward has seen an all-around increase in fishing activity.
McKahan: “The fishing has just been phenomenal, not just the salmon but halibut was incredible, also all sorts of different kinds of fish you can catch while you’re out there. And also whale watching, there’s just been incredible sea life out there to see so that’s another huge draw and it’s been a really successful summer.”
The stakes have been raised for the 60th celebration of the Seward Silver Salmon Derby, according to McKahan.
McKahan: “We’ve got more sponsors than ever, and bigger and better prizes than we have in the past. As always the vehicles from Chevrolet of South Anchorage are a big draw as well.”
The 2015 Grand Prizes range from $1,000 to $50,000 and include a 2014 Chevy Silverado and Equinox.
The derby will begin this Saturday, August 8, and go through August 16.
