Concern Mounts As Hospitals Fill Up With COVID-19 Patients, Officials Urge Alaskans To Get Vaccinated

Health officials are pleading with Alaskans to get vaccinated against COVID-19 as the state’s hospitals continue to fill up with patients. Due to the community spread of COVID-19, Central Peninsula Hospital limited visitation to protect patients, families and staff as of July 27. What was hoping to only be temporary precautions has now continued on as the Kenai Peninsula is well into another spike of cases.

 

A quarterly hospital report was presented to the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly at their Tuesday evening meeting where Assemblyman Jesse Bjorkman spoke to Shaun Keef, Central Peninsula Hospital’s CEO:

“Some folks are asking about your capacity numbers and bed vacancy and they noticed that visitation was suspended not too long ago. How are those numbers looking?

 

Shaun Keef, Chief Operating Officer:

“As far as our capacity when I walked in this morning, all of the beds were full. We have been holding patients over in the ED because we have been so full lately.”

 

Meanwhile, Alaska State Hospital and Nursing Home Association President and CEO Jared Kosin told Alaska’s News Source that the state’s hospitals are working at a sprint to care for all of their COVID-19 patients, a pace he says is unsustainable:

“We can run at this pace right now. It’s like a sprint. But how long can you sprint for? A year and a half is a lot to ask for from frontline workers. So unless we kind of get our act together and take getting vaccinated seriously and can take mitigation measures seriously, I mean, like I just said, Oregon’s standing up field hospitals. Is that what we want to see here? I don’t think so.”

The Department of Health and Social Services reports that the current statewide alert level – based on the reported number of cases per 100,000 people over the past 7 days – is high (red) at 340.0 with reported widespread community transmission. The state health department says 92% of Alaska’s new COVID-19 cases over the last week were in unvaccinated individuals.
