Spring Break is happening next week for most schools across the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District, but the concern on the minds of many is that COVID-19 cases could spike with the return to school the following week.
Pegge Erkeneff, Director of Communications, Community and Government Relations for the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District spoke to KSRM saying that they discussed the loosening of restrictions for mask wearing at the most recent Board of Education meeting, “We know our counts are down on the Peninsula. We are concerned about what will happen after Spring Break and travel that may happen when everything is only strongly recommended as far as testing and strict social distancing. We did see an uptick this week in our schools with some positive cases and a significant amount of people that need to quarantine, but, at this point, we are talking about, after the return of Spring Break, to eliminate the mask wearing during physical education, recess and some sports, but that’s not definite yet, but that is where we’re heading for sure.”
With the return of students to the classroom full-time daily, the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District continued to require face coverings for staff, students, guests and at athletic events, in all COVID-19 risk levels (low, medium, high and extreme) until further notice.
NOTE – Kachemak-Selo, Nanwalek, Razdolna and Voznesenka schools are in session and have a different Spring Break. Those who do have Spring Break next week will return on March 15th to begin the last quarter of the school year.
